Overview
A gaming lounge, not a gaming floor
The casino at Coastal Verge occupies a single floor above the lobby. It was designed to hold about a hundred and forty people comfortably, which in practice means you can hear the person across the table from you.
There is carpet rather than a light show, there are windows onto the lake, and there are clocks on the wall. The casino games we run are the familiar ones — blackjack, roulette, baccarat, three card poker and a bank of gaming machines — and casino entertainment here is one part of a resort evening rather than the whole of it. Most people come up after dinner in Matagouri and go back down to Bobs Cove Lounge afterwards.
Everything in the room is played in the room. Coastal Verge does not operate any form of remote or interactive gambling, and nothing on this website accepts a stake.
The Gaming Floor
What you can play
Table minimums are posted at each table and at the cashier before you sit down. Staff will explain any game to a first-time player without making a performance of it.
Slot machines
Forty-eight gaming machines along the eastern wall: modern video slots, a handful of classic three-reel cabinets and a small linked progressive. Denominations run from 5c to NZ$2.
Every machine displays its return-to-player information on the cabinet. Machines are switched off at closing and there are no cash machines on the gaming floor — the nearest is in the lobby, one floor down.
Table games
Twelve tables in total. Blackjack and roulette run every day the lounge is open. Baccarat opens from 6pm Thursday to Sunday, and three card poker runs on the same schedule.
House rules for each game are printed on a card at the table and available at the cashier. Ask the dealer if anything is unclear before you place a bet — that is what they are there for.
Live gaming
Every table in the lounge is dealt by a person. Our dealers are trained in-house over eight weeks and licensed before they take a table, and they rotate off every hour.
Texas hold'em tournaments run on the first and third Saturday of the month, starting at 7pm, with a posted buy-in and a capped field of sixty. Registration is at the cashier from 5pm on the day.
The Kelvin Room — VIP gaming
A private room off the main floor with two tables, its own bar and a view down the lake. It takes bookings for higher-limit table play, private groups and the occasional company evening.
Reserved through the concierge or the gaming lounge manager, minimum twenty-four hours ahead. The same entry rules apply: 20 and over, photo ID, no exceptions for anybody.
Before You Come Up
Hours, dress and entry
- Opening hours
- Sunday to Thursday, 2pm – 2am. Friday and Saturday, 2pm – 4am. Closed on Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day until 1pm, as required by law.
- Age
- Twenty and over. This is a legal requirement under the Gambling Act 2003 and is not negotiable, including for hotel guests.
- Identification
- A New Zealand driver licence, a Kiwi Access (18+) card or a current passport. These are the only three documents we can accept. Anyone who looks under 25 will be asked, every time.
- Dress code
- Smart casual. No high-visibility workwear, no gang insignia, no bare feet. Ski gear is fine before 6pm in winter, which is a concession to where we are.
- Payment
- Cash and EFTPOS at the cashier. We do not extend credit, and hotel room charges cannot be used for gaming.
- Photography
- Not permitted on the gaming floor, for the privacy of other guests.
Host Responsibility
If it stops being entertainment
Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It is not a way to make money, and the longer anyone plays the more the odds do their work. We would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.
Our duty manager is on the floor whenever the lounge is open and can arrange a break, a taxi, or a self-exclusion order on the spot. Self-exclusion is voluntary, confidential and free, and you do not have to explain yourself to anybody to ask for one.
